NCS2 Rebooted

Letter to the Naruto SL Community from the Creators of NCS

We are well aware of rival combat systems attempting to label NCS2 as “dead.” I can assure you, we are most certainly not! We are in the midst of performing some major restructuring, to address all of the issues the community has had with thus far. We have had great success in this regard.

Any attacks from rival system should be seen as desperation. They want NCS2 out of the way. We will not comply with them. You deserve better.

The incident of some NCS development team leaving, and as a result the removal of Iwakgaure, can be summarized as this: some members of the team did not agree with some of the clans being added, and those members threatened to leave if they didn’t get their way. NCS does not run like that. As a result, those particularly disgruntled members left and took what they could and did whatever they could to hinder future development of NCS.

The rest of the development team feel the community should be informed about the subject, as there have been many rumors and mentionings of what actually happened.

* * * * *

Down but not out. Despite a setback, Naruto Combat System version 2’s development is still on track, and the sim will soon be open for both business, combat, and roleplay. “People think we are dead,” Bioblaze Payne told SL Newspaper, “I just wanted to set the record straight.” A look at the NCS Official Mall District showed a shopping area constructed with some of the stores filled and the team looking for more. “I just opened up the sim,” Bioblaze explained.

Bioblaze went on to say his goal was to bring both elements of “massive multiplayer online” and “first-person shooter” to NCS2, “Everyone can make a prim fire from another prim. We are trying to bring meaning to it, melding both role-playing, with constant action, to combine a seamless yet, interesting form of playing that has yet to be named, on Second Life that is.”

Bioblaze showed a picture of the new HUD display, which was different from the previous version, “We are debating if to use countries or villages. We have yet to decide. We will be including a TOS (notecard) on creation of your character along, with a full database, to show your stats to your friends, and even look them up online, giving people not only control over their character, but actual Information on what they have purchased and objects they have won from tournaments, as well as other things.”

“Going along with this System, we are adding several styles of taijutsu along with almost fifteen Clans. We are sporting clans that are in the anime, not sticking ourselves to just the normal clans, but the clans that are within the anime and manga itself, branching off to where other Naruto combat Systems have yet to tread. By doing this, we are hoping to have a very in-depth system. People will no longer have 15 HUDs with 15 characters. They will have one HUD with one character, and may buy additional slots to store new character data.”

“We are not only implementing a new HUD, but we are also doing a Team-Based System and a Role-Playing Tool. You and your friends can attach a special HUD which will be very very low cost, and none of you will be able to damage each other on Role Playing Missions and SL Grid Wide Missions, allowing you to communicate off the radar. If you are familiar with Naruto, they have a Squad based system. With the Team HUD you will be able to make your own Squad so several team members can gain experience, as well as Different objects/items/stats from various missions/battles/tournaments. At the top you will be able to place your own Team name which will auto fill once you have all agreed on the Squad name. The Squads will have a one-time fee, and will be identified throughout Second Life by their name and picture. We will work on haven this also shows on the webpage, given a list of all the squads for every single village.” The HUD itself will still be free, “Never going to charge for it.”

Of the sim, Bioblaze explained everything should be up and running within a week, two weeks at most, “period.” He and his teammates, such as texture artist Syhon Hoxley, lead builder MeetThe Engineer, and Bioblaze’s partner Dark Broome were busy setting things up, “We’re currently working on a few juitsus.”

Bioblaze explained the HUD version in development could not be shown, “Too many people want to try and copy us. ... but the basic style of the artwork hasn’t changed. A basic idea of what’s to com. ... People want to be the best, and NCS2 is the best Naruto system combat-wise. We pull all the stops to get things done.”

“Step Up!” to Content Theft

In the wake of the wholesale theft of sims and content over the weekend, like many people we wanted to do something about it – and also about all the other content theft that we have been fighting for so long – in the Content Creators Association and in magazines and on TV shows.

Since then we’ve talked – and have come up with the idea of the Step UP! campaign, a campaign centred on a special day of action that everyone can become involved with, and that can empower and inform people.

We are aiming for a day that draws together action, education and celebration. We want a focus that empowers people – and rather than dictates to people, allows them to express their own creativity in a variety of ways. It also draws attention to the strength of feeling that there is here on the grid.

2) We need to make people feel empowered by what they do. And, because we are hardly the most time-free people on the grid – we need something that they can largely organise themselves!

So these are our thoughts:

We are nominating a day as Step UP! Day – which will be November 5th – Guy Fawkes Day or Bonfire Night in the UK.

Action:
a) On this day – no-one uploads textures to the grid. This should show the economic power of people acting together, without harming content creators. We want Linden Lab to see the power of the feeling about the problem of content theft – and to discuss urgently strategies for tackling it.

b) As many people as possible wear an orange ribbon as a sign of support for creators. And creators can design these – they can be lapel ribbons, they can be arm bands, they can be tee-shirts … the idea is to make the orange ribbon the theme of the day. And everyone who gets a free orange ribbon gets an information sheet – explaining what content theft is, what they can do about it etc. And they also get an information pack that they can give to their friends (which also contains an orange ribbon for their friends).

Why orange? It’s been used before, but has no overwhelming association (unlike pink or red ribbons). It’s a bright, noticeable colour. It suggests explosions and colour …

And it’s an opportunity for stores and content creators to become involved too.

Celebration:
The day ends with parties. Bonfire parties. That means that all around the grid, people have parties.

We’re not going to be trying to stage Big Events that maybe only 60 or 70 people can cram into. Instead we encourage every club to hold a Step Up! party. We encourage every musician to play Step UP! events. Everyone on the grid has a part to play. Everyone can take part.

Education:
This is going to come in several forms.

1) Info pack
These will be given out with orange ribbons in stores and at parties.

2) Media
Audio and Visual service ads. The Press. The Blogsphere – everyone can play there part in getting out the message that we have had enough, and we have chosen to Step UP! against content theft.

3) Video
Short informational films – tutorials about content theft.

On the Designing Worlds shows we’ve talked again and again about the need for a social shift – so that people see content theft as socially and morally unacceptable. So … let’s go for it!

Watch this space for more details on how you can become involved, and how you can share with us your plans for Step UP! Day.

The concept originates with a small group – Angie Mornington, Gabrielle Riel, Gwen Carillon and Saffia Widdershins. But more and more people are now becoming involved. And you can too.

M & M creations

M&M and Trees are a fine combination, in real-life working and living as much as possible in nature in which we find .. trees.
"As soon as we entered SecondLife, we found the most wonderful Not-Possible-In-RealLife 'parks, gardens, rough nature, fantasy- & fairy and botanical reserves'." says 10 Gooson of M&M
Not long after being here, they bought some land and 10 & Marcthur Goosson decided to keep it as natural as they could.
The wish and process in creating imaginary nature took some time and is still growing. M&M Trees has developed from 10's FlowerShop.
The more sculpted shapes Marcthur creates the more inspiration 10 can find.
Next to real-lifes inspiration she mixes up the two. First pure flowers then plants followed. Not long after; flowerlights, huge complex plants, low-prim flowers Finally the trees, corsages, Bridal-Series and again trees.
M&M wanted to rez all creations and trees need space. Months of hard work followed and it has now found it's final shape.
For a shop the park is huge, it takes time to see it all. All kinds of animals, sounds and 'twinkles' can distract the visitor. The swamp is wet and coulourful here you can find all those tropical delights and such fantastic trees and so much more! Shrubs, small trees, fantasy trees, petal & leaves-furniture, huge trees or just beautifull lights and lanes of trees.
The most central point must be the circle of standing stones this is also where you will find the teleports to other areas.

The Machinima 48 Hour Film Project

For those looking for an opportunity to show off a movie made online with a few friends, there is a media event coming later this fall that will allow them the chance: The Machinima 48 Hour Film Project.

“For the past two years, I've been a participant ...” Machinima producer Chantal Harvey explained in a notecard, “This year, I'm going to be the Machinima Producer. ... the dates for the Machinima 48HFP are set. It will be November 6th through the 8th. Registration has already begun, and slots are going fast, so sign up now!”

“Filmmakers compete to see who can make the best short film in only 48 hours. The winning film goes up against films from around the world. Enter today! Space is limited. Each completed film is guaranteed a screening in Second Life in front of a full audience. The winning Machinima team will compete against the other 75 city-winning films at the 48 Hour Film Project's Filmapalooza, our international screening and awards event. And this year, we are pleased to announce, that Filmapalooza is at the NAB Show in Las Vegas in April 2010! “

Meeting up with Chantal recently, she had a few more things to say in-avatar, “Oh the 48 Hour Film Project is a big one really. Seventy-five real-life films and machinima. ... People team up for this.” She explained this wasn’t just for those in Second Life, but other virtual places online, “All can enter, not just Second Life, it’s big. ... It works like this: 24 teams can enter of all engines, World of Warcraft, Grand Theft Auto, ... Half Life, Sims, ... all of them. Then we meet and team leaders are given for things ... they get they get a prop, a line, a character and a genre ... romance, western, drama, thriller, buddy, etc. ... and 48 hours to deliver a machinima. Twenty-four genres given at random. Musical too (laughter), so, should be fun.”

Chantal explained three teams had hooked up already, at the time of the discussion, so there was room for 21 more.

Those interested can enter at the website: http://www.48hourfilm.com/machinima/, and for any questions, email Chantal at machinima@48hourfilm.com. After the filming is done, the premiere screenings will be Thursday November 12, 1 PM and 5:30 PM SL time at the RastaOpen4 sim.

“The Fire King” author in Second Life

By Nazz Lane

Several weeks ago, I received an instant message inviting me to special event at the Athena Writers Island to meet and listen to the noted author Marjorie M Lui (aka MarjorieMLiu India in Second Life) to talk about her latest book, “The Fire King”. She discussed the book, which is the latest release in her Dirk & Steele Series and talked of her other series, Hunter Kiss along with being a writer and author. I took the ride over to listen in and enjoyed the next hour scrolling through the chat lines of questions from the dozen or so avatars assembled and Ms Lui’s replies. I unfortunately had to leave before the events completed, but shortly after, I was contacted by her in-world representative, Cheepoka Laval and we discussed my meeting with Ms Lui in-world for an interview.

After an exchange of e-mails the scheduled date and time arrived as did Marjorie after accepted my teleport request. We met at the headquarters of the SL Newspaper.

Nazz: Hello Marjorie, it’s nice to meet you.

MarjorieMLiu: Hello, again! It's great to meet you, too. I'm still trying to get a hang on this thing.

Nazz: I’m assuming you'd not spent too much time then in second life so far.

MarjorieMLiu: No, I haven't been back since that last chat.

Nazz: I saw in an e-mail that Cheepoka (aka Taughnee Stone) wasn’t able to join us.

MarjorieMLiu: I saw that, too. She's great -- a wonderful person, and a fantastic designer.

Nazz: She's handling your PR in second life?

MarjorieMLiu: Yes.

Nazz: How did you find out about second life?

MarjorieMLiu: Through Taughnee. I tried to use it more than a year ago, and got scared away by the avatars themselves -- I just couldn't get mine to work. In preparation for that book chat, though, Taughnee worked with me.

Nazz: You weren’t scared away by rude behavior I hope.

MarjorieMLiu: Oh, no, just the technical aspects of it all. And, of course, SL is the same as RL in the sense that if you don't know anyone, you'll still feel awkward.

Nazz: Yes, that's true. Have you done any exploration of second life, like going to a live music event, an art exhibit or shopping yet?

MarjorieMLiu: No, none of that.

Nazz: I wasn't able to stay for the entire book chat when you appeared, how did that go for you?

MarjorieMLiu: It was fantastic. I loved the forum, and the ease of reaching out to so many people from the comfort of home. And the avatars! Everyone was so beautiful! I mean, seriously -- in RL, how many chances would a person have to chat about books in a beautiful library on the sea?

Nazz: Not very many. Are you aware of some the writing groups that exist in SL?

MarjorieMLiu: No, I'm not. Are there many?

Nazz: There's several ... the Written Word is perhaps the largest ... in fact there's a large event coming up next month where they are the sponsor … Autumn Writers Exchange.

MarjorieMLiu: What kind of event?

Nazz: It’s basically a three day event ... one can set up a virtual booth ... there are writing and poetry competitions … live readings by authors … concerts.

MarjorieMLiu: Sounds very cool! Do you participate, or just cover it for the SL newspaper?

Nazz: Both, I wrote an article on it and did a reading last year

MarjorieMLiu: What did you read?

Nazz: Some of my own fiction and a piece I did for the SL newspaper.

MarjorieMLiu: Nice, any particular genre?

Nazz: I use SL as a backdrop for my characters ... the main character is a lawyer from Chicago. He meets and falls in love with a woman in SL.

MarjorieMLiu: That's very cool. Do people publish books in SL?

Nazz: Yes they do, I've published five chapters of my serial novel.

MarjorieMLiu: Is there a bookstore type place where you keep them, so that people can browse through the fiction?

Nazz: There are several different types of venues in SL, bookstores are one of them

MarjorieMLiu: Are there virtual books -- in essence, where people can "live" the story? I'm not sure that makes sense, what I just wrote.

Nazz: There are role play SIM’s, areas where people take on the guise of a character … wild west days, like Colorado and Deadwood and science fiction SIM’s. Some are quite extensive in their set up, like the Dr. Who series for example.

MarjorieMLiu: Sci-fi SIMs sounds cool. Wow! Dr. Who? Love that show … and Torchwood.

Nazz: In your latest book, “The Fire King” is set in central Asia, you'd commented about being fascinated by that region of the globe, what’s so intriguing about it for you?

MarjorieMLiu: I've always been fascinated with nomadic cultures, and that area is rich with history -- partially because of the Silk Road. Many cultures and people passed through Central Asia and you can see it in the faces of the men and women who still live there.

Nazz: Have you visited the area?

MarjorieMLiu: Close. I've been near the border to Mongolia. The region is beautiful.

Nazz: I think I saw some where were you'd commented on character development by thinking of the character and after then where to set them, is that a fair representation of how and what was it about Soria that said silk road and central Asia?

MarjorieMLiu: Yes. I'm a very organic writer. In the case of THE FIRE KING, I had originally thought about setting it in the American Southwest, but it wasn't isolated enough for what I thought the characters had to go through.

Nazz: You'd also commented on listening to loud music while developing your characters, what were you listening to with Soria?

MarjorieMLiu: Gosh, I need to pull up iTunes! I think I listened to a lot of Imogen Heap and other stuff. I'm all over the board from Alternative to R&B to Greatest Hits of the 80's.

Nazz: You had commented in your appearance at the book chat, that your next book is set in the South China Sea, what drew you to that area?

MarjorieMLiu: My research on piracy. That area has a lot of trouble with pirates.

Nazz: It does have that reputation.

MarjorieMLiu: Yup. One of the most successful pirates in history was a former Chinese prostitute who sailed those seas several hundred years ago.

Nazz: Oh wow!

MarjorieMLiu: That's what I said! She needs to have a book written about her.

Nazz: Are you planning for more appearances in SL or other virtual worlds?

MarjorieMLiu: I hope so. No specific plans at the moment, but I would guess that around my next solo release, next year...I'd like to come back. I actually have an anthology coming out at the end of October, called Never After. Then, another anthology in January, called Inked.

Nazz: I know you're just about out of time … any closing thoughts or comments to share with my readers?

MarjorieMLiu: Just that I think this is a wonderful place, with so many creative possibilities. I think you've made a wonderful community here.

Spreading the Hope – RFL Hope Hunt + Race begins Sunday, September 27

Starting Sunday, September 27, the Relay for Life of Second Life Hope Hunt + Race will be taking place throughout Second Life. The Hunt will last for three weeks from 10am SLT on Sunday, September 27 through Saturday, October 10. All proceeds go to Relay for Life, the American Cancer Society’s signature activity.

This is a treasure hunt in Second Life. It was conceived by the ‘All-Stars’ Relay for Life team who originally organized a hunt in June, but had to close down the hunt due to technical issues. They have now resolved the issues and are looking forward to a successful event!

So how does it work? Over 200 participating merchants will hide pink Hope roses at their locations. Like most hunts, many of the merchants will be putting give-away items - ‘swag’ - in the roses. There will also be 100 roses on the American Cancer Society sim. Unlike many hunts, merchants can place as many roses as they choose at their location - there is no limit. The rose represents hope for a cure, and the organizers chose pink for this event because October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

This is also a ‘race’. Cash prizes have been donated and will be awarded to the winners at the conclusion of the event, as follows: first prize: L$45,000; second prize: L$25,000; and third prize: L$10,000. The prize money has been donated anonymously, in honor of a loved one who lost the battle to cancer.

To take part, hunters click on a sign to receive a free Hud, which they can wear, which will track the number of roses they find. The signs are set out at participating merchants and there is no entry fee. The leaderboard will be displayed on the Hope Hunt website: http://thehopehunt.blogspot.com/ and will be automatically updated every three hours.

The merchants will purchase the roses they place at their location(s). All proceeds from the sale of roses go directly to Relay for Life. There will also be a website that provides merchants with ‘traffic reports’, showing the number of avatars who have found roses at each of their locations.

Says Sidda Jubilee of the All-Stars team: ‘Each and every one of us at one time or another has been touched by cancer. It has destroyed so many lives and Relay for Life enables our avatars to participate in defeating this enemy. We want to stamp cancer out of our lives now and forever. With hunts being so popular in Second Life, there is no better way to spread cancer awareness across the grid; it will also spread this awareness to each and every avatar's real life as well.’ She continued: ‘Special thanks are due to Arete Diplomat whose wonderful scripting made it work.’

Tayzia Abattoir, Relay for Life of Second Life Event Chair for 2009-2010 says: ‘I am excited to have it utilizing the American Cancer Society sim so more people can see the services we have here :) It is a wonderful idea, and the way it was thought out and put together took a lot of work and dedication. Kudos to everyone involved with such a creative fun event to raise funds for the ACS!’ She added, ‘I plan to look for some roses when I find time to quit working LOL!’

Happy hunting! And if you would like to volunteer for Relay for Life 2010 please join the ‘SL’s RFL Volunteers’ group and look out for the announcements.

For cancer information 24/7, please visit http://www.cancer.org or call 1.800.227.2345 in the USA.

Evolution in the Playa

The excitement is palpable!
The landrush is on for parcels for the spectacular Burning Life in Second Life.
This event is based on the Burning Man event in real life that takes place every year in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada.
You can check this out on the web.
The Burning life Groups IMs are hot and heavy every day with questions and comments about the land rush and for a chance to get to the playa and chose a plot if you are so lucky.
I was able to make it into the sims during Friday’s rush. Dusty Linden refers to the land rushes as an experiment in cooperation. It takes a while to sort out who got what land and is able to build.
I found glee in those who have obtained plots for their artistic endeavors and some downcast faces still looking for the elusive plot. They still have chance to grab one over the weekend so are not completely forlorn.
One was thrilled since this was her third try during the past week and she made it.. There are already some impressive builds in some of the sims.
If you search Burning Life you will find there are many sims to visit when it opens on October 17.
The theme this year is Evolution and all builders are reminded to stay with the desert evolution in their building;
I enjoyed it so much last year that I have applied for a “job” this year but will be writing more about those experiences.

Ferd Frederix text and speech apps.

I have travelled Second Life and seen some wonderful things and some dreadful things, too. Haven’t we all? I have met people from different countries in sims dedicated to those countries and their languages and had to use an online translator just to find out if I was making a fool of myself with my schoolboy Italian. (I was!)

However, someone recently brought to my attention a translator, a FREE translator, which used Google to do the translation in Local Chat, immediately and for several languages at the same time.

I already had a translator but found it difficult to use so kept it in the bottom drawer of my inventory.

Well, it sounded to good to be true. However with my newshound’s hat on, I went to Phaze Demesnes (227, 224, 24) and found Ferd’s free Google Chat translator. I was standing in queue waiting for the others to get their copy.

I clicked the board and the translator went straight into my inventory, and I was amazed. There was a long list of languages, clear instructions and within half a minute, my world had changed.

At the bottom of my screen, there appeared a list of names, distances and languages.

Then, when we all got talking, I could see someone saying something in Spanish, somebody else in French and someone in Korean. THEN, it came up on the screen in English, for each one!

Astonished at how quick it was… and accurate, (I speak French and could tell with that language, at least.) I went off to foreign sims and tried out “my” new skills. Well, I’m a happy bunny. I can go anywhere and be understood in over fifty different languages, just by speaking English. All we need is to get this into Real Life!

I was so pleased that I contacted the creator and he introduced me to it’s sister application, Ferd's Chat to Speech V1.4 Universal Web Translator. You could have knocked me down with a feather!

This one is based on the translator, but converts the typed words into audible SPEECH!

Now, that is a very difficult thing to do and uses up a lot of bandwidth so it is limited in its distribution to people with poor eyesight and organisations who represent them.

But, how wonderful! I know we have got adapted keyboards and screens and all sorts of clever stuff in RL, but it is something like this that shows the potential of SL.

A few people like Ferd Frederix, with their skills can open up new worlds to many more people who may not otherwise have been able to communicate in text, because this is not just Voice, it is simultaneously translated, a different thing altogether.

Ferd reserve all rights to determine which individuals and organizations may use the Chat to Text Speech system.

Examples:

· Sight-challenged individuals

· Organizations that support the blind

· Event organizers

With these two apps, I think Ferd will have made an enormous contribution to communication in SL. And I, for one, would like to thank him.

Interview with Cindy "Zig Zag" Babii of ZZ Studios

One of the more famous (or infamous) characters in online comics is Zig Zag, the owner/star of an “adult” movie studio. Created by Max Blackrabbit, the character was adopted by Eric Scwartz into his popular Internet strip “Sabrina Online” - the title character answers a want-ad for a webmaster and to her surprise finds it’s to a "blue movie" studio, though takes the job despite her embarrassment, leading to a number of misadventures. The comic itself has a PG/PG-13 rating, with no nudity and one swear word in over ten years of online publication.

As it turns out, there is a ZZ Studios here in Second Life. It is located in the southeastern part of the Falcon Valley sim. Besides being a social area, the place makes and sells it’s own “blue movies." I recently had a chance to meet up with owner Cindy Babii, whom is also called Zig Zag here in SL, for a few questions.

Relax and Have Fun!

One of my favorite sims in sl is Corner of Revolving Time in Relaxation. Since I first discovered it before Christmas of 2008 and relished the freebies I was able to get for Christmas décor I kept returning to see what was going on. There is always something new.
Vickijo Rivera keeps reminding me that this sim is owned by all of its 700 members. Newbies are invited to make their home there. I am a member now and so I spend a lot of time there.
Of course, as a fisherman, I love the frequent contests and get to as many as I can. There are so many custom fish and rods in that water worth a bounty, some 1000K, designed by the great Migizi North
There is lots of camaraderie during those contests.
There is a photo contest every month which brings many avatars to visit and vote. A photo booth with some lovely backgrounds is set up at that location that you are free to use. This is one place where you do not have to pay for each vote.
Don’t miss the Chickens for sale. Nearby is a relaxation meditation place where avatars rest. The Japanese Gardens are delightful with some freebies and very low priced plants available. Inside the Corner geo- dome you will find more freebies on all three levels. Many well known designers donate to the collection. Do not miss the cave below the geo-dome which is also hiding some freebies and some very interesting Clocks and party items .
The Corner cave Club hosts dance parties during the week with a live DJ. And for the gamers there is Zyngo nearby! This is a well rounded sim! Holidays are coming starting with Halloween and everyone will be looking for décor and you will find it in the Corner. The Halloween House is in progress Vickijo and Saucy Loire are busy preparing great fun for everyone in the sim but I am sworn to secrecy ! Don’t miss it!
There are several hunts going on now and more in the future, all the way to the New Year. You must make sure you set your landmark because you will want to revisit often and perhaps become a part owner by joining the group. http://slurl.com/secondlife/Relaxation/90/166/42 is a good place to start.

A credible source questions SL statistics

When it released its second quarter usage statistics, Linden Lab painted a rosy picture of the current in-world situation.

It boasted, among other things, that "user hours hit a new all time high of 126 million user hours", up 33% from the same period in 2008 and 2% over the first quarter of 2009. LL says that the meagre growth from quarter to quarter this year can be explained by a new anti-bot policy.

This sounds sensible and reasonable. The problem is that recently, the Nielsen market reasearch firm has questioned the credibility of such data because it is raw from the central database.

Much like television, Second Life usage has to be "adjusted". Imagine that a small device records your TV usage, when it is playing, on what channel and for how long. This is raw data. Now, compare this to the time you actually spend in front of the TV set, giving your full attention to the program or advertising that is playing. This would be adjusted data.

Nielsen favors the latter option because it is closely tied to the actual time when you see what is played. In the end, you could leave your TV set playing the same channel 24/7, which doesn't mean you are watching the programs and seeing the advertising. Networks and advertisers want to target real use.

Linden Lab only interprets the raw data, which advantages its growth scenario. This is, when you think of it, anything but credible. I could leave my avatar sitting on a chair for hours somewhere on the grid and LL would consider that I have spent, say, 5 hours being active on that day.

Meanwhile, Nielsen would calculate that in reality, the only time when I was truly active was when I visited a commercial sim for 10 minutes to buy a new pair of shoes. The rest of the time, I could be making coffee, going to the bathroom, talking on the phone or whatever else a human being can do at home.

So, I suggest taking official Second Life statistics with a grain of salt. The problem is that meanwhile, Nielsen hasn't come up with a transparent measurement system comparable to television, with a sample of SL users to test their activity level when they are logged in.

Created Content at risk again.............

No doubt about it content creators have a lot of risks to face in SL these days and today I was made aware of yet another issue with the permissions system that is in place at the moment.
According to my source this is not a new bug its one the Lindens have been aware of for a long time (yet have not fixed).
My source firstly asked me to provide a NO COPY/ NO MODIFY object, which i dropped on their profile, a few minutes later they gave me 5 copies back - I was still the creator and the original perms had not changed yet - they now had 5 copies of a no copy object!
I won't tell you how it is done (I have recreated it myself) as I think that would do a great deal of harm to content creators already stretched through copiers at work in SL.
I did however go to live chat to see what the Lindens had to say about it:

dana_Vanmoer: I can recreate someone elses no copy no modify object

dana_Vanmoer: the permissions do not change but i can copy an object as many times as i wish regardless of the original permissions

XXXXX: Ok Dana this is actually one we are aware of. Our engineers are working to fix it urgently and we are asking if any creators notice their work being copied they send in an abuse report and a DMCA

dana_Vanmoer: you already know about this?

XXXXX: We do and our engineers are working to fix it as an urgent situation and we have asked people send in dmca and abuse reports.

XXXXX: Is there anything else I can help you with today?

dana_Vanmoer: no but how urgent is urgent this is scary for any content creator?

dana_Vanmoer: The person who told me about this reported it over a week ago

XXXXX: I do understand Dana however as I am not an engineer I can not give a timescale other than to say they are definitely working on it and content creators should know how to send in DMCAs

dana_Vanmoer: they do but DMCA takes a long time

dana_Vanmoer: a week is a long time of having items copied

XXXXX: I do understand Dana however I can not provide any further information than I have already. If you believe your work is being copied contact us and we will absolutely investigate it.

To me this is scary as i sell all my wedding things transferable - no copy - no mod.
Good luck to all content creators I hope linden Lab really are treating this one as URGENT.

Spotlight On...Trowzer Boa Live in West Chester, PA 29 August

On Saturday, 29 August, I traveled out to West Chester, PA to see Trowzer Boa, aka Dave Renz in RL. He and his band, the Dave Renz Jazz Duo, were playing at a local, downtown winery, Kreutz Creek Winery. The winery's slogan is "Built on dreams with determination...capturing the art of the wine making process, from vine to bottle." The actual winery is located in West Grove PA, but the place in town sells exclusivley all the wine made there in the pub.

The store front window served as stage and the drummer was perched up there in the window with the remaining band members in front. The band consisted of Dave on sax, a bassist and keyboardist, as well. The band members are all former students of the high school where Dave teaches.

The band played for an amazing 3 hours, taking several breaks. Not being a huge jazz fan, I couldn't say what tunes they played but I thought they were terrific and I smiled and smiled. Nothing like live music to give a person a new respect for a particular form or style of music. This band had an all together fantastic sound and I had a blast. The crowd was fun, there was lots of laughter and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

From his website: "Dave Renz has been playing saxophone professionally on the East Coast since the early 1990’s. His compositions and performances have appeared on cd’s alongside Steve Howe, Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull), Robert Hazard and Annie Haslam (Renaissance). He has recorded with some of the top players/producers in the industry, most recently for Grammy winning producer Phil Nicolo as part of the Klemmer-Hill-Reid project. Dave Renz has performed From New York City to Nags Head North Carolina, and appeared multiple times at the Berks Jazz Festival and Music Fest in Allentown PA. Look for him regularly at Chris’ Jazz Cafe in Center City , The Blue Point Grille, in Princeton New Jersey, and in and around the Philadelphia area."

Since his performance in West Chester, I had occasion to see Trowzer for the first time in SL. Unaccompanied by the band, Trowzer still plays an amazing sax. If you love jazz, check out Trowzer at your next opportunity.

Tonight Live with Paisley Beebe, 23 August

Featuring Nazz Lane, AMForte Clarity and Wiz Norberg

Our very own Nazz Lane appeared recently on Tonight Live with Paisley Beebe. A very skilled interviewer himself, Nazz was on the receiving end this time. Speaking to Nazz just prior to the show, he did not seem the least bit nervous. I, of course, had no doubt he would be brilliant as he spends much of his time here in SL interviewing others, I had every confidence he was prepared and anticipated the types of questions he would be pressed to answer.

Nazz was the first guest. After some sound checks and double checks, Paisley began. Initial bleed over (for lack of a better way to describe it) with each of the speakers made it a bit difficult to follow. The engineers went to work and quickly straightened it out, and the interview proceeded.
Nazz explained he began his journalistic endeavors with Lane's List, a personal account of his experiences in SL. He later stumbled across an ad for the SL Newspaper in his travels and thought he might enjoy writing stories about SL and other events in SL. He contacted the owners, JamesT Juno and Dana Vanmoer, and was given an opportunity for a trial run, for which he was both grateful and excited. This has blossomed into a nearly full time career in SL and he has produced numerous articles and stories for the paper, as well as other publications, including New Vibe magazine, to name one.
Paisley inquired of Nazz what it is about SL that makes good journalism and why he thinks so many people ask him to write for them. Nazz replied he believes it is the fact that he tries to get to the "who" of an individual, to understand who they are, and what motivates them to do what they're doing in SL. He also tries to uncover what drew an individual into SL and what holds him or her in. Understandably, this requires him to be able to keep track of who's doing what in SL and keep his finger on the virtual "pulse" of SL events. He does this via blogs, twitter, RSS feeds, as well as art forums, such as Pirates, Angelgate and Diablos, to keep up on events in the art scene.
Nazz has recently completed the first 5 chapters of his SL book, Borders of Our Lives. The story Is based loosley on the characters in SL, relationships and experiences, from the newbie experiences on. The main character, Jeffrey Goff, is author Jeffrey Stone and RL attorney. Jeff is quickly befriended by a female mentor, who shows him the SL ropes, gets him clothes, hair, etc. Once acclimated, Jeff realizes how it is affecting his RL and finds it difficult to separate the two worlds. (A truer statement I have not heard).
Paisley asked how much of the book was autobiographical versus lives and experiences of people he has met in his SL travels or perhaps people he has interviewed. Nazz acknolwedged he has met many people here, some of whom he absolutely loves and adores and would also like to meet in RL. What Nazz really hopes to achieve with the book is to provide a vehicle by which to bring the SL experience to those outside of SL who have never experienced a virtual world. He tries to achieve this goal through the narrative and also through the dialogue of the characters. Nazz finds it mind boggling that, despite the lack of tactile senses in world, somehow we have a sense of how people feel, how something smells or feels, or the experience of dancing with someone and actually feeling like we are touching them. I think any of us in SL would agree with this, as odd a concept as it may be. This is a diffcult concept to portray to someone who has not experienced SL. It's amazing what our own imaginations can do. Nazz attributes it to the fact that many of us, in our first lives, are engaging in various forms of communication daily, whether it is for the job, via instant messaging or texting, or for some other form of personal enjoyment.

The book can be purchashed via his business office on Tranquil found in Nazz's picks in his profile, or by sending him an IM directly. (Author's Note: Tranquil has since been sold and interested persons should IM Nazz directly to get a copy of Borders of Our Lives.)
According to Nazz, he had always wanted to be a writer in RL but had never tried it. Since he began writing in SL, Nazz has taken steps to hone his craft and hopes to transcend the realm into RL in the future. I am sure we will also enjoy his book when all planned 12 chapters are completed; I anxiously await the final chapter.

Following Nazz was singer/songwriter AMForte Clarity. I have heard AM many times and was compelled to join her group. A very talented performer with a surprisingly refreshing sound, AM spoke about her life growing up in a small village in a suburb or Toronto, Canada.

After performing a song, AM took her place on the couch with Paisley. When asked how she chose her SL name, AM revealed that AM are her RL initials, standing for Anna Maria, her true name. Forte is actually her RL last name so, as she said, she does not hide anything.
AM recounted a bit of her childhood, claiming it was tough growing up and schools were difficult. She noted she was "so uncool" as a kid. Family life was also a struggle for AM. Her family being very religious, she was not permitted to listen to secular music. Of course she did, being the rebel that she was (and still is by her own admission). AM believes being a bit of a rebel sort of keeps it all real and reminds us we are alive as we go through our sometimes mundane, routine filled lives, governed by schedules and "must do" activities. She left home at age 20 to go to North Carolina for school.
Having escaped from the small town environment in which she was raised, AM began looking for love, admittedly in all the wrong places. I can definitely relate to that! A true poetess at heart, AM began turning her prose into songs, setting the words to music. SL has helped AM grow her RL music career. Her website, AMForte.com, includes 5 professionally recorded songs, many other songs she has written that are new and yet to be recorded, and about "300 ideas for other songs," she said, laughing. She has been putting very much effort into getting her RL career off the ground for the past 4 or 5 years, sending demos out to multiple producers, etc. , even including, in some cases, lavish gifts. This she said chuckling, claiming she had heard this was the way to go. Unfortunately, it got to be a bit pricey but she continues to try. You have to admire her tenacity. AM would love to do a RL tour with other SL musicians. My wheels started turning when I heard this. I have ideas for her.
The thing that keeps AM going, she claims, is she nearly died at one point, she did not elaborate, but it opened her eyes. She decided she needed to really start living having been given this second chance at it. This has made her decide that what she really wants to do is sing and write songs rather than have a boring 9-5 job, no matter how profitable it may be. She hopes her songs may help save some lives, through people identifying with the lyrics and the emotions in her songs.

As a poet myself, I can relate to the introversion and using writing as an outlet to express those thoughts and feelings, bourne from our RL experiences, when perhaps times were not always very happy. Listening to AM describe her life's struggles through growing up with strict parents who did not allow her to do much of anything, and often feeling out of place in her environment, I truly felt as though I were looking in a mirror, seeing a reflection of myself and my own life (minus the near death experience). The similiarities were truly uncanny. This interview gave me welcome insight into this talented musician, songwriter, and poetess.

Wrapping up the show was Treettv CEO, Wiz Norberg. Paisley described Wiz as somewhat of a "quiet achiever" with not much written about him, and a real "mover and shaker in SL" due to the content of Treettv, which is fast on its way to becoming one of the biggest media outlets in SL. Wiz says he will appear on some shows, but generally he is so busy making things, he doesn't have much time. The best interviews he's done are with people who have a clue about what he does here in SL, so those interviews go well and are enjoyable for Wiz--much like talking shop to a colleague.
Treettv has been producing 14-15 shows per week generally, for the last 18 months or so. Wiz stated that while it is difficult to know how many people are watching the productions at any given moment, many people watch after the fact, which is why Treettv makes media available via many different options, to accommodate the global community's schedules.
Paisley posed the question that, because there is so much online media available to folks, how is Treettv planning to compete with that? Wiz doesn't believe it is a competion, TV is fun and everyone knows it's graphics they are looking at. "The real competition we have are what other people are doing with their time...because television itself is just .... we're interested in new ways people consume things." Audiences are amazingly committed to the shows on Treettv according to Wiz. He sounded very surprised by this.
Paisley noted that Treettv itself is nearly about to be launched from the former SLCN TV. Wiz clarified that Treettv is already launched and people are watching it a lot inworld. The changes are more due to better production and high definition TV, but the real change is the launch of the website, which is geared to expanding the audience and use the web more effectively. One of the problems they are facing is that so many people are involved for a mere one hour show. Treettv has 3 full time people and various others, and the whole endeavor becomes somewhat expensive. Wiz believes the website will help with this. Wiz would like to turn the virtual island they are on into a bit more of a showcase, complete with museum. The studio Wikipicture project they are currently involved with is a bit of an experience, and it remains to be seen how it will all unfold.
Paisley acknowledged that much of the SL video/media available closely mimmicks RL, citing the example that her SL studio for the talk show is very like a RL TV talk show set. Wiz believes that what happens in SL is just a mirror of our real lives, using the example of journalism, and splitting things into chapters just as in RL. People have tried to do some different forms of writing, but there are "certain ways that we engage in art" and television is a reflection of our current lives. Some shows, such as Simboarding or The Snails, are ideas completely off the beaten path of what we would consider normal, reflective TV. The people factor is that we just want to learn about each other, which I personally is a normal, valid, human response.

This was a great show and to her credit, Paisley is a very skilled and talented interviewer. She exhibits terrific poise and quickly puts her guests to ease. Check out Paisley Beebe on Tonight Live weekly, some of your favorites may be the target of one her shows.

WHAT IS VIO?

I have the good fortune to rent an office on Vio. What is Vio? Vio is two things. It is a place and a concept.

The place is set on two island sims, Vio and Vio II.

The centrepiece on Vio is a circular auditorium called The Crucible, with seating for over 70 people. Facing it is a giant whiteboard which can be used for any of several purposes. In front of the whiteboard is seating for the speakers. The auditorium is the middle of a five-part layout. The four outer squares house sweeping arches which support a huge exhibition hall, over 20 metres up in the air, with more than 20 exhibition stands. A wide corridor takes you round the hall which is spaced in such a way that you do not feel crowded, a welcome difference to many exhibitions I have attended in the past.

Separating the four outer squares and running under the auditorium are waterways flowing out to the sea. This is a business centre with a beautiful heart. Three of the outer squares are open spaces to enjoy. The fourth is grassed over and is surrounded by information panels, telling you all you need to know about Vio, the place and the concept. Surrounded by these, is the “Cool Wall” a bank of panels dedicated to each Vio resident, telling all about them, each panel gives out information created by the residents themselves.

Through the trees that surround the whole of the centre, you can glimpse several superbly designed single-storey buildings. These are the offices of Vio. There are more on Vio II.

On Vio, there are twelve complexes, as each building is known, and they all back on to the sea. How wonderful to be able to take a break from the day’s work and take in such a view! Each one has the facility to offer up to four different layouts. Depending on your needs, you can have a quarter of the building, separated from the rest for L$ 700 with 150 prims a week. Next up is a half at L$1400 a week with 300 prims. If you want more, this can be negotiated with the estate manager, Esvee Fallen or the owner Xander Newman.

On Vio II, there are four areas separated by water ways, running to the sea. In the centre is a beautiful water feature. There are large, two storey offices available at L$1900 a week offering 360 prims as well as the one storey buildings. The whole aspect of Vio II is more mixed than that of Vio, which is the hub of the island group. It is beautifully landscaped and has a serene atmosphere to it, enabling you to make those important decisions in tranquil surroundings. An interesting touch is the lighthouse, in one corner.

If that’s not secluded enough for you, may I present the Skyboxes? There are eight single storey buildings and four two storey buildings, over 500 metres in the sky. Standing on one of the balconies, I can see the others suspended in a bright blue sky. Majestic!

Vio offers a wide range of office facilities, from 200 sqms to 1660 sqms, from 150 prims to 450. And the rest… The rest? Conference facilities, networking as part of the business culture, the use of the Crucible for discussion, seminars and meet & greet. There are secure meeting facilities available to hire and so on. There is definitely more to Vio than meets the eye.

“But, Kim, you mentioned two things”, you ask. Yes I certainly did.

The concept. Vio is much more than a group of offices, however well designed and however beautiful the surroundings. It is a community.

Take a look at the information panels and you will see what I mean. Seriously, after you have read this article go to Vio, 145, 146, 27. Or look in Search for Vio and that will take you there.

You will find yourself at the heart of the Vio central hub. Go straight to your left and read the panels from 1 to 20 and be prepared to be amazed. I’ve worked on business parks in RL and SL. But this is different. Based in Second life, Vio brings you the best of both worlds.

You can have your own private office, where you can work in peace and privacy, you can reach out to two worlds with your message from here. People will come to you in their numbers to hear what you have to say and to see what you have to offer.

I work from home in RL (Real Life) but I have access to the whole world because of what Vio and Second Life offer me. I can do this because I am not alone. There is the Vio community.

Ask a question in the Vio Business Group window and the answers are there, not immediately, not every time (I don’t want to paint a false picture of perfection. Perfection doesn’t exist, but Vio does a good approximation!).

Then there’s the website http://www.getvio.com/ , full of information and a calendar of events. It has the business directory, to which you would be added, if you became a Vio networker. There are links to sources of information and help.

To use their own words, I will answer the title question and introduce you to their concept, which makes Vio so very, very different.

“What is VIO?

VIO (VIRTUAL INNOVATIVE OPPORTUNITIES)

VIO is a collaborative business incubator bringing together virtual world and real world companies to work together to accomplish their goals. VIO is also the name of the SIM or island in the virtual world of Second Life developed to serve as a resource for the RL and SL business community.”

Here are the contact details again: Estate Manager, Esvee Fallen, owner Xander Newman. Website: http://www.getvio.com/ , Landmark; Vio (146, 147, 27).

Come and join us, this could be the beginning of something big!

The 9/11 Anniversary in Second Life

It was eight years ago that the deadliest terrorist attack on the United States struck, damaging the Pentagon, destroying the New York World Trade Center, and killing about 3000 people. In real life, ceremonies were held across the country. Thousands came together near “Ground Zero.” Other ceremonies were held at the Pentagon, the crash site of Flight 93 near Shanksville Pennsylvania, and other places where people gathered to honor those whom were killed.

In Second Life, a number of memorials have also been built. large and small. Probably the largest (in sim area coverage) and most attended was the September 11th Memorial in the dAlliez Land Headquarters sim. It was a pool of water with a walkway around it, surrounded by four marble walls, etched with the names of the fallen. One corner was open, showing a number of pictures of those who died that day. Rain was falling, adding to the atmosphere of sorrow.

Numerous avatars of all shapes stopped by to pay their respects, leaving behind flowers, wreaths, flags, pictures of Christ, and other momentos. Among one pride of feral cats sitting near one group of wreaths and flowers, “ ... my Grandpa was trying to save some people up in some of the floors, and sadly while it was collapsing, he didn't make it. But he was brave and he saved the people. Well some. (sad) “ (shocked expression) At least he died saving people. (sad)” A vixen looked at the pictures, “... look at them, white, black, Christian, Jewish, Muslim ... “ One man commented, “I was a solider, and spent the next four years of my life shortly after chasing and killing these S.O.B.s. I hope these families are at peace today, for me going over there would be lost.” People nearby thanked him, but he humbly responded, “No, I’m just a small part. ... God bless these families.”

Alliez Mysterio, a real estate businesswoman in Second Life, is the owner of the land the memorial is on, “People started coming in last night and it has not stopped, she told me. “I donated the land, 1/4 sim. It was an honor to do so. And today, increased the prims here to double.... The people coming here today were just wonderful.”

Alliez couldn’t give a total of how many showed up as the sim had been hit by griefers, “records were wiped out. It took over an hour to get the sim up. But Linden Lab was great with the help they gave me. ... Liam Kanno created this Memorial. ... this is the 2nd year it has been in existence. I met a guy here today who found his Dad’s name on the wall. I helped a girl find a friend on the wall. I hope more families will hear of this Memorial and consider adding their loved ones photos to be shared.”

Liam Kanno in real life is Odin Liam Wright, with his own article on the memorial: click HERE.

Regant Estates’ New York NYC sim had another memorial. Two transparent images of the World Trade Center Towers stood high in the air, ghostlike. On the streets nearby were a seemingly countless number of flags, going around the streetcorners. Most were American, but there was an occasional flag from Britain, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Venezuela, and other countries, a reminder the tragedy was international.

The NYC sim, New York City Block, is owned and built by a resident of the real life New York: Cheri Bing. Originally part of another sim, it later moved to it’s own. The Twin Towers have always been a lasting part of the sim since constructed, with American flags and a picture of a red white and blue ribbon: “9-11-2001 Never Forgotten.” For the 9/11 anniversary, the place was made into a memorial. Pictures of scenes of the day taken by a retired detective who was there that day were put up in the lobby and outside. Panels with links to a website for the families of 9/11 dead were set up. Fire trucks were parked outside. Memorial candles were placed on the sidewalk. A plaque with a poem tribute to firefighters was in front of the building. There was also a package that when touched would give someone a 9/11 t-shirt and hand-held candle. Residents passing by made their own contribution by dropping flowers on the sidewalk.

There was also a guestbook in which people could leave messages, Cheri saying, “I'm really glad the founder of the Africa sim asked if i had a guest book, which I bought right away as I think it is very nice to have. I will keep it here always as I will the Families of 911 website. ... Bethlee (Spad) created the lovely prayer plaque to distribute to all”

A media screen was also set up, Cindy Bolero streaming the documentary “9/11” about a group of firefighters whom were among those at the Towers that day. The film was originally going to be a in depth look at a rookie fireman, the camera taking casual scenes every day for the several days before. With the dark day, it took on a whole new purpose, showing the frefighters as they were going in, including some scenes taken from inside the north tower, not previously shown prior to this film. During the film was one firefighter whom anxiously awaited word of his brother, who was somewhere in the stairway of the tower. He was still in when it collapsed. The grieved firefighter was comforted by his peers, “Yesterday, you had a brother. Today, you have thirty.”

Of the people dropping by to pay their respects, many were in police or firefighter uniforms, often with tags identifying them in firefighter groups, “It is an honor to be apart of this remeberence.” There was also an avatar from the Justice League present as a security precaution against possible griefers.

Cheri talked some about the day, “... my son was at the World Trade Center every single day and that day he wasn't there. Also a cousin of mine worked on a higher floor and she had called in sick that day. ... My son's clients were in the towers though. He had courier service. Of course the business was no more after that but at least he lived.” Another resident talked about someone he knew living near the towers, and when they collapsed, a human torso landed on their porch.

Cheri also talked about a near confrontation that night. Some Pakistani shopowners were supposedly celebrating the collapse of the towers, and a number of young adults were talking about going over to fight. Fortunately, the police were there to prevent an ugly scene. One man talked about how at first he wanted the kids to have gotten the chance to beat up the Moslems, but after some time to think instead invited everyone in the neighborhood, including the shopkeepers in question, to gather together for a vigil in honor of those who fell.

There was a little talk about the “Truthers,” those whom thought the 9/11 attacks were not caused by Islamofacist terrorists, but a secret plot from within the US Government. One man commented, “There were plenty of studied done on (the collapse of the towers). The jet fuel and fire caused intense structural damage. I actually work with the wife of the guy who lead it. ... sort of sucked for her. They got death threats and phone calls/letters from all the conspiracy theorists. He was one of the leads of the final independent report. Stephen Cauffman is his name: NIST report at: wtc.nist.gov.”

Besides Second Life Newspaper, the NYC sim's memorial was also reported on by CNN’s iReport, "Not all areas of Second Life memorializing 9/11 were as popular with many visitors. Some commented that a few individuals used the day to attempt to collect personal funds and/or celebrate the day in a less than solemn atmosphere. Many commented that the NYC area by Cher provided a 'tasteful and respectful' approach to remembering the impact of 9/11; making it an excellent community site in the virtual world for people to continue to visit and express themselves."

The vigil at the NYC towers continued throughout the day and night, people still coming in at Midnight. Cheri thanked people for coming by.

Blue Mars

If you have spent some time in second life you are familiar with the phrase"Your world,Your Imagination "The mantra for being a resident of second life and the reason Linden Labs is praying and hoping that you will at least pay 9.95 a month at min to play not counting if you are shopping freak or land owner. In the past 6 months within Second Life I have travelled all of the grid to witness some amazing things in regards to the creative aspect of sim designs and various items within.
Taken part in events that have real life social causes connected to them, ie( Relay for Life) Autism awareness to name a few. For the people have that have worked hard on the social causes of what they believe in personally I salute you for making a difference.
During my travels I have seen wonderful things such as panel discussions on various topics issues that are real world and others that a concern to the residents of second life, had the pleasure of coming across comedy shows and to my surprise the comics where actually funny.
On the other side of the coin I have seen things within second life that make you want to pause for second and ask yourself "What the *uck" just happened but I digress.
For me I have had the pleasure of meeting some truly wonderful people with each one with his or her gift that they can make a difference within the grid.
I have meet some really shitty people also, yet this is to expected just like within the grid of the other game as we know as real life. Each of us are residents of Second Life for his or own on reason some are creative types, some are great musicians and some comedians and a host of other things that they also bring to the grid. Some view second life as game, some view as a modern day chat room with graphics and a shot at pixel sex. Others are gifted and they make a difference within the fine arts community of second life.

Hands down Second Life is good platform it has its' plus and minuses depending who you speak with and the chosen topic to talk about. As a resident you get use to the myriad of tech problems that residents of second life deal with on a daily basis.. Its missing, asset server problems, sim rolling restarts.
Yet lets not forget the dark side of second life not talking about sex either but that will be addressed later on. You might encounter just totally nasty people because they chose to act in that manner. And countless numbers of kids or teens playing as so called adults and folks that seem to think that second life is a career for them and to that those select few, I wish to pose you a question: Does Second Life give you a 401K? (not that the markets are really worth a shit right about now" Ok soapbox is put away on that subject.
In a nutshell according to some Second Life is basically modern day" Wild West" basically anything goes and you can find it regardless of how creepy it is, how high it really floats your own personal boat or kinks if you chose to partake in that also good bad or ugly.
If you have spent anytime in virtual worlds you know that each brings a certain flair to the table that may work for you or not there are good features and bad with each one.. Picture a virtual world that is a pure 3d setting well folks there is a new kid on the block its called Blue Mars. First of all Blue Mars is currently in closed Beta... Its projected to green light in Jan 2010. After spending time in Blue Mars first of all the visual quality is unmatched in anything I have seen in any virtual world; beyond words the sounds, the lights, the shadows from the avis.. With closed beta running for a week on Blue Mars has a great potential to be wonderful.. on various levels.

Yet a world that is based on content true 3d.... the chance of being part of something that is great and being there from the beginning the shot at making a difference within platform.
First up, it is not going to be a “Second life killer” for the simple reason of: some people really do like the Wild West Sandbox. Some like creating for the sake of creating without learning some seriously intensive and rather daunting 3d programs. Some like the feeling you get finding something completely awesome that you never thought possible. We like the freedom it gives us to do pretty much anything if you dare to get it a run at it.
Blue Mars is not Second Life. It’s something different. More advanced. No matter what Linden Labs tries to force SL to be, it is and will forever be “your world, your imagination.” It’s a sandbox. You can make it into anything you want. However, there are some serious limitations that LL will never be able to fix like lots of people in one spot, Whereas BM sits more in the middle of being able to create whatever you want to and a perfect ideal world imagined by a group of professional 3d artists (ie video games). Sort of more like: people who can afford a city’s world you can play in, can bounce around to different worlds and also buy some stuff.

BM is for those of us who’d rather have more power to create things without having to overcompensate for SL’s quirks (the lot of daily problems in world). It’s for indie video game developers to make a game people don’t have to find and dl off of Steam. Or for fully immersed Role Play communities to have full control over their piece of the world, including the type of content you can bring in.
Granted they are touching on things that SL has tried to be or we’ve tried to make it, but many of those things SL just doesn’t do very well. However, the structure of BM and how it works makes it more viable for those types of things. Like crowds, RPG Sims, and much more detailed worlds.

Yet some folks will get bored with Blue Mars because there isnt really anything to do but walk around and look and you may come across the actual live person in world to chat and exchange ideas and opinions about Blue Mars.
Others may log out of Blue Mars and bitch its empty and nothing to do...Its not trying to be like second life at all..

9-11 : We Remember

At the NYC sim, at (215, 40, 23).

Fireman’s Prayer

When I am called to duty,
whenever the flames my rage,
give me strength to save some
life whatever be their age.
Help me embrace a little child
before it is too late,
or save an old person from
the horror of that fate.
Enable me to be alert,
and hear the weakest shout.
And quickly and efficiently
to put the fire out.
I want to fill my calling
and give the best in me.
To guard my every neighbor,
protect his property.
And if according to my fate
I am to lose my life,
please bless with your protecting hand
my children and my wife.

9/11/01 - We will never forget
